Umuwi Ethnic Studies was founded in 2023 in response to escalating, well-funded policy proposals that ultimately targeted the work of educators and harmed BIPOC students across the country. Policies like banning Critical Race Theory and LGBTQIA2S+ conversations and dismantling affirmative action began from organized, authoritarian movements that threaten the right to inclusive education while undermining public schools’ potential to foster a racially just, multiracial democracy.
