RDLF News: Issue 20

Rozina Breen: "Shoot for the Moon"

During a recent visit to Chicago, Rozina Breen, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) in the UK, sat down with members of the RDLF team to talk about her experiences as a nonprofit leader of color.

Rozina is an award-winning editor who joined TBIJ in 2022 from the BBC. Her vision is to diversify the organization’s storytelling, representation, and sources of revenue.

Through our work with the Leaders of Color Collective (LOCC), we have seen that many nonprofit leaders, especially those of color, face unique hardships caused by a lack of trust and a withholding of resources due to ill-founded discrimination by many traditional philanthropic organizations and government agencies. However, we’ve learned that by being in community with their peers and having frank conversations about shared obstacles, nonprofit leaders of color can build toward collective action and power. We were very curious to hear how Rozina’s experience compared to our Chicago-based grantees and the LOCC initiative.

Patric McCoy at the Crystal Ball

Last month, RDLF staff members Jessie Mott and Jessica Jones-Lewis attended Chicago Art Department's (CAD) Crystal Ball to celebrate our board member, Patric McCoy. The event featured his new exhibition in partnership with Diana Solís, titled Just Below The Surface. It re-envisions existing LGBTQ+ narratives to examine and celebrate the enduring legacy and transformative histories of Chicago’s Black and Brown communities. Photography from the exhibition is on view at CAD until October 26th. You can also place bids on the artwork through this online auction, which ends on October 27th.

And congratulations to Chicago Art Department on 20 years!

Welcome to the CCWF Paper Trail

In a previous issue, we highlighted the opening of the new media center at Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF), opened by Pollen Initiative in March. Now, 6 months later, CCWF has launched their brand-new monthly newspaper called Paper Trail. The newspaper is written by those incarcerated at CCWF—the largest women’s prison in the world—for other residents and the staff at the institution.

Congratulations to Pollen Initiative and CCWF for this massive achievement. Read more about Paper Trail here.
Congratulations to the following partners, who recently received awards:
In addition, "well done" to the following partners who were recently featured in news and media:

  • Inside Climate News partnered with CBS Reports for an investigative piece delving into the promising but controversial practice of "advanced recycling."
  • Mateo Mulcahy from International Latino Cultural Center appears on Domingos en Vocalo to discuss the importance of cultural preservation and representation within the Latino community, particularly through the arts.
  • Camesha L. Jones from Sista Afya Community Care is featured on PBS Newshour explaining how the Black community faces more than one kind of stressor that affects a person's mental wellness, and the importance of ensuring that more Black providers enter the mental health field.
