Movement on Montrose Grand Opening

On July 9th, The Reva and David Logan Foundation (RDLF) celebrated the grand opening of Movement on Montrose (MoM), an event space and non-profit collective in the Albany Park neighborhood.

In addition to a large room for events, MoM has three dance studios that can be rented by organizations and community members. While the RDLF owns several buildings throughout Chicagoland, this is the first community building that will be operated by the Foundation, doing business as Movement on Montrose.

"The foundation believes deeply in MindSite's mission and the importance of their work."

This year's Double Exposure Film Festival and Symposium will be in Washington, DC on October 7-10, 2024. Double Exposure, a project of the investigative news organization 100Reporters, celebrates the finest new documentary films inspired by the investigative instinct. It combines film screenings for the public with a professional symposium for journalists and visual storytellers.

Feature-length films and shorts eligible for consideration. Films selected must not have been previously available to Washington, DC audiences, either through theatrical release or streaming. Those looking to submit their work can do so here by September 16, 2024.

You can also get involved by being a volunteer screener. Volunteer screeners will get a first peek at submissions, watch and rank films, and assist festival programmers by providing initial feedback. Candidates should have a love of documentary filmmaking and/or investigative journalism, and have the bandwidth to view films on an agreed schedule. Fill out the interest form here.

What We're Reading

This issue, we are featuring four recently published series that span years of investigative journalism:

The Gaza Project

Forbidden Stories: "For the Gaza Project, 50 journalists from 13 different news organizations worked together to investigate ... From targeted attacks to the destruction of infrastructure known to host media outlets, the Gaza Project reveals a damning array of evidence against the Israeli government and calls into question their army’s denials about targeting the press since the war began."

40 Acres and a Lie

Mother Jones, Center for Public Integrity, and Reveal: "Over the course of two and a half years, a team of Public Integrity reporters, editors, and researchers identified 1,250 Black men and women who had earned land as reparations after the Civil War ... For the first time, these living Black Americans were made aware of the specific land that had been given to and then taken away from their ancestors."

Deadly Prices

Investigate Europe: “Confidential agreements and medicines out of reach for millions. This investigation goes inside Europe’s secret drug pricing system, revealing a world of opaque deals and unequal access. From our eight-months’ investigation we have found this, and much more, about a system that determines how sick people in Europe live or die."

Blind Mules

inewsource: "'Blind mule' smuggling has been a known strategy among Mexican drug traffickers for decades. But the U.S. government has taken little action to warn the public about a threat that could affect those who travel in the more than 15 million personal vehicles ... inewsource spent a year investigating this project, digging through hundreds of court files, talking to experts and uncovering the stories of those affected."
